History
Jewish Community Action was founded in 1995, uniting Jews throughout
Minnesota in pursuit of social and economic justice. Diverse in our
backgrounds and traditions, we come together in the spirit of tikkun
olam, working to build a better community and a more just world.
We bring a distinct Jewish voice to the fight for justice, honoring the
memory of our parents and grandparents who battled similar adversity to
build a future for us. We are passionate advocates with a pragmatic
approach to social change. By addressing community problems at their
roots, and helping people to help themselves, we follow the teachings of
twelfth-century scholar Moses Maimonides, who said that the highest form
of giving is to provide the tools to prevent poverty.
Jewish Community Action addresses issues that shape the lives of people
throughout the metropolitan area. We work through working groups – a
group of our members who are interested in researching and developing
specific strategies for addressing key issues. We also work with a range
of constituency groups – New Americans from the former Soviet Union,
youth, and affiliated and unaffiliated Jews.
