Central Corridor
Campaign to Add Transit Stops Along
Central Corridor
The Transportation Equity / Stops for Us Coalition, of which Jewish
Community Action
is a member, is leading a campaign to add three stations at Hamline,
Victoria and Western Avenues along the Central Corridor.
Significant Victory for Stops for Us
On Wednesday, August 26, 2009, the Central Corridor Management Committee
passed a motion stating these major points:
The Metropolitan Council agrees to include
stations at Western, Victoria, and Hamline as additive alternates in the
“Civil East” construction bid package for the Central Corridor LRT line.
The Metropolitan Council has informed the
Federal Transit Administration (FTA) of this course of action and agrees
to conduct a new ridership model run with all three stations included
and necessary environmental analysis for all three stations. Ramsey
County Regional Rail Authority will pay for these costs.
The City of Saint Paul commits up to $5.2
million to build the first of the three missing Light Rail Transit (LRT)
stations as part of the construction project.
Upon first release of project contingency
funds, Ramsey County and the City of Saint Paul will use its portion to
build a second missing station.
Funding for the third station will be
secured through the second or third release of project contingency
funds, an funding application to the County Transit Investment Board, or
another source.
The stated commitment of the full build-out
of all three missing stations at Western, Victoria and Hamline by the
completion of the line is a major step forward. Our challenge now is to
work with our elected officials to help secure the funding necessary to
make this commitment a reality.
The Stops for Us coalition consists of
neighborhood groups, faith-based organizations, housing organizations,
and community organizations. Its collective focus is to ensure that
three additional stops are built at Hamline Ave., Western Ave. and
Victoria Street by the completion of the line. These stops are part of a
larger equity strategy for the future development along University
Avenue.

FROM JCA
Community
Reinvestment
Thanks to our volunteers, we’ve identified and sent hand-addressed
letters to over 1,000 Minneapolis and Brooklyn Park homeowners and
tenants, and knocked on over 400 doors to connect people with free
foreclosure and tenants’ rights counseling. We’ve joined with the
Northside Community Reinvestment Coalition (NCRC) as well as allies from
the Hmong, Liberian, Latino and other communities. Together we’ve made
more than 60 referrals of at-risk residents to counseling!
