Congregational Organizing

The purpose of congregational organizing is to bring together synagogue social justice (action) committees with Jewish Community Action, to build capacity to promote and take action on social- and economic-justice issues.

Jewish Community Action has deep and ongoing organizing relationships with 11 congregations in Minnesota.

Latest Updates From our Congregations

Mount Zion Congregation

The Summit University/Frog Town Area is one of the most diverse communities in the St. Paul neighboring Mount Zion Temple.  The Children’s Initiative, the partnership between Jewish Community Action and Mount Zion Temple, is focusing on forming relationships with this community in a variety of different ways.

A national grant to create a Promise Neighborhood where children are supported from cradle to career through creating a web of support in the neighborhood has been awarded to the Summit University Area.  Currently the Promise Neighborhood, a partnership between the City of St. Paul, Wilder Foundation and the St. Paul Public School District is in its planning year.  Members of Mount Zion Temple have partnered with the community in joining several of the solution action groups which meet every two weeks until June to devise a plan for success.

Members of Mount Zion sit on the Community Building, Middle School, Post Secondary and the Elementary School Solution Action groups.  An event on Wednesday, May 4th at Mount Zion Temple is being planned to inform the wider congregational community about the work that is being done and how they can join in.

Mount Zion Temple hosted the Summit University Area Martin Luther King Breakfast this year.  This celebration marked the start of a variety of community events in where we share our stories and bring together our diverse community.  Every month we are planning on bringing together the communities to strengthen ties to each other.  Last month the community forged a snow storm to view a play which highlighted the historical voyage up the Mississippi of 6 slaves to freedom.  In March, the community is gathering together at the Jewish Community Action Immigrant Rights Freedom Seder.

To create trust and community members of Mount Zion have joined the St. Paul Fair Lending coalition which helps to maintain community wealth by creating support for those going through foreclosures and creating power to change banking practices in our community.

Temple of Aaron Social Justice Committee
The social justice committee is focused on affordable housing and foreclosure prevention.  Members of Temple of Aaron have joined the St. Paul Fair Lending Coalition and are door-knocking and holding a house party. Members are also working with the Plymouth Congregational Housing Foundation on expanding housing for the homeless in St. Paul.

Howard Goldman and Bill Lerman, also a member of the Jewish Community Action board are involved in this work.

Brian Zaidman became the new chair of the social justice committee in the past year and has taken a lead in labor and immigration issues at Temple of Aaron and in the community, including delivering a Dvar Torah at the synagogue.
