Jewish Community Action is a 23 year old membership-based nonprofit organizing the Jewish community for racial and economic justice in Minnesota. The community organizer will provide leadership and continuity to one of JCA’s flagship campaigns, the Decriminalizing Communities campaign, which combines our criminal justice reform and immigrants rights campaigns in fighting against the excessive detention and incarceration of poor, immigrant, and POCI communities and for the freedom and dignity of all. This will involve ongoing and close relational work with a core group of JCA members, and strategic and relational organizing with a core set of partners. The community organizer will report to the Organizing Director.

Job Description:

The Community Organizer will work closely with JCA members, leaders and staff of partner organizations , and other JCA staff in order to carry out the activities related to the Decriminalizing Communities campaign.  Responsibilities will include:

- Taking a lead role in organizing the Decriminalizing Communities Leadership Team, comprised of JCA members;

- Continuing to build and maintain an active base of involved leaders by inviting in new members and mentoring existing members into expanded roles through 1-1 relational meetings and group coaching;

- Working with synagogue social action leadership to develop action plans to increase synagogue involvement in the Decriminalizing Communities campaign;

- Monitoring, conducting research on, and providing analysis of public policy initiatives and opportunities related to criminal justice and immigration reform;

- Identifying issue and coalition opportunities for JCA and developing and maintaining relationships with key community leaders;

- Working with JCA staff to create and run innovative and meaningful trainings and educational programming for JCA members;

- Coordinating action and outreach opportunities such as door-to-door canvassing and phonebanking;

- Organizing and assisting in the coordination of public events – such as turnout, setting up public meetings and hearings, and conducting pre-meetings with members;

- Working with the JCA Communications Director to document and publicize the work of the Decriminalizing Communities campaign through newsletter articles, action alerts, social media, and other related press materials;

- Assisting in administrative tasks related to the position, including tracking outputs/outcomes and compiling reports for communicating progress to board and funders ;

- Side by side with members and partners, continually evaluating and analyzing where we are, dreaming together of new possibilities, innovating on what we already have, making team decisions, working hard to implement them, recognizing defeats, and celebrating wins as we reach toward the world we want to see.

Experience and Qualifications

Experience in community, labor, or faith-based organizing and familiarity with social and economic justice issues.  Should have some experience working on issues related to criminal justice reform and/or immigrants rights. Familiarity with the Jewish community and personal connection to immigrant and/or criminal justice-impacted communities preferred. Undergraduate degree or equivalent combination of work and life experience. Preferred:

- Excellent communications skills, written and spoken;

- Attention to detail and good organizational skills;

- Community organizing and leadership development skills;

- Ability to facilitate meetings;

- Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects;

- Ability to work independently, self initiative;

- Team oriented, ability to work with diverse groups;

- Ability to imagine new possibilities while following through on existing commitments;

- Knowledge in basic computer usage including internet research, Google Suite, and Microsoft Office;

- Flexibility to work some evenings and weekends.

Additional Information

The organizer will ideally begin no later than June 2018.

This is a full time position, salary commensurate with experience.
