The whole Torah on one foot

Sunday night is the start of Shavuot, where celebrate receiving the Torah at Mt. Sinai. It is customary to study throughout the night to dive into and learn the complexities of it's teachings and layers of wisdom.

And yet, the Torah is also very simple. In this story from Talmud, Rabbi Hillel was asked to explain the whole Torah while standing on one foot. He said:

“That which is hateful to you, do not do to another; that is the entire Torah, the rest is commentary. Now, go study.” (Shabbat 31a, 6)

We don’t want anyone to evict us from our homes. We don’t want anyone to target us because of our religion. We don’t want anyone to put us and our loved ones in danger.

The Torah tells us that we must make sure that everyone is housed and protected from violence. No exceptions.

The rest is commentary.

Chag Shavuot Sameach.
